An excerpt from The Lithographs of Peter Hurd about the print: I first saw this old man on Main Street in Roswell and engaged him as my model. I dont recall his name, but I do remember two things: that he was a patient sitter and showed not the slightest interest in the finished drawing on stone.

From AAA: Peter Hurd, born in New Mexico, where he maintained a ranch throughout his life, portrayed his native land which he loved and knew all too well. Hurd studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and spent his winters in Philadelphia where he was a member of the Alliance and the Chester County artist associations. He received the first prize in landscape at the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts in 1930. At the New Mexico Military Institute, his frescos decorate the Thomas Memorial Building. Perhaps his widest acclaim came from his illustrations from Last of the Mohicans, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Story of Siegfried. Hurd was accorded the unique honor of having two one-man shows in New York at the same time.
